The toughest finish line: the global horse racing world mourns Varenne, the undisputed king of the track.

The worlds of horse racing and global sport are in deep mourning. Varenne, the greatest trotter of all time, has passed away at the age of 31. “Il Capitano”—as fans affectionately called him—died following a sudden, massive heart attack at the LJ Stud Farm in Eboli, Campania.

With him, a piece of Italian history passes away—an extraordinary athlete capable of uniting an entire country in front of their television screens to watch his incredible sprints.

A truly legendary list of achievements

Born on May 19, 1995, Varenne was not merely a racehorse but a true cultural phenomenon. Under the expert guidance of the Swede Jori Turja and thanks to perfect chemistry with his longtime driver, Giampaolo Minnucci, Varenne dominated racetracks around the world.

His statistics border on the realm of sports fantasy: 73 races run, 62 victories, and a prize-money haul that made him the richest horse in history. He was the only trotter to win the world’s three most prestigious races in the same year (2001): the Grand Prix d’Amérique in Paris, the Gran Premio della Lotteria in Naples, and the Elitloppet in Stockholm.

A legendary treble, to which was added—in the same year—a Breeders’ Crown triumph in the United States accompanied by a world record; a feat that earned him the title of “Horse of the Year” in three different countries simultaneously.

The Genetic Legacy: A Dynasty of Champions

Varenne’s impact on global horse racing did not end with his retirement from competition in 2002 but continued through his extraordinary career at stud. With an initial stud fee ranging from €12,000 to €15,000 per service (peaking at €18,000 in Sweden in 2008), “Il Capitano’s” career as a stallion generated a total value exceeding €30 million.

In subsequent years, the fee was adjusted to approximately €5,500 with an upfront deposit, or up to €8,500 under the “live foal” arrangement. From a total of over 2,000 offspring, a veritable dynasty of champions emerged, dominating the international racing circuit.

The most impressive statistic concerns the Derby Italiano del Trotto—the country’s most prestigious race—which was won by no fewer than five of his direct offspring: Lana del Rio (2008), Nadir Kronos (2010), Olona Ok (2011), Pascià Lest (2012), and Testimonial Ok (2015). Among them, Pascià Lest emerged as the highest-earning male offspring, with over €1.5 million in prize money.

The quality of Varenne’s bloodline is confirmed globally by other trotting legends such as Lisa America—a European champion with €1.4 million in earnings—the American mare Southwind Serena, and the phenomenal chestnut Vernissage Grif, a dominant force in the Gran Premio Lotteria at Agnano.

As early as 2008, with only their first two generations on the track, Varenne’s offspring had already won 30 Grand Prix races, cementing a biological legacy unparalleled in the history of the sport.

More than an athlete: an Italian icon

What made Varenne unique was not merely his immense physical power, but his extraordinary tactical intelligence. He understood the race, knew when to accelerate, and possessed a fierce determination that crushed his opponents. For years, the colors of Enzo Giordano’s *Scuderia Dany* flew atop the world’s highest podiums, bringing Italy a sense of sporting pride comparable only to the triumphs of Ferrari or the national football team.

His longtime driver, Giampaolo Minnucci, remembered him with deeply moving words, highlighting how Varenne changed the lives of everyone who had the privilege of being close to him forever.

A legend that becomes eternal

After retiring from the racetrack in 2002, Varenne enjoyed a long and well-deserved retirement, surrounded by the affection of the many people who never stopped visiting him. His earthly remains will be laid to rest in Eboli, where a mausoleum is planned so that fans can pay their final respects.

Today, the Captain reached his most difficult finish line, leaving behind an unfillable void but also a legacy of triumphs that no one can ever erase.

Run free, Captain. Your legend is eternal.
