On Wednesday, 6 August, the equestrian world mourned the passing of a great protagonist: the KFPS-approved stallion Elias 494. After a tragic accident at the pasture in Sweden, where he was enjoying his retirement, the horse had to be put down.

Elias 494 represents an extraordinary chapter in the history of the Friesian horse, proving that this breed can reach exceptional heights even at Grand Prix level. With its impressive palmares, acquired also thanks to the collaboration with rider Marc-Peter Spahn, the horse contributed significantly to the recognition of the breed in the international dressage scene and as a sport horse by the WBFSH (World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses).

Elias 494’s main achievements include qualifying for the World Championships for Young Dressage Horses, although he was unable to compete in the final for reasons related to KFPS recognition. He was European and national champion, competing in renowned international events in Hamburg, Gothenburg, Herning, Doha, London, Samorin and Falsterbo, among others.

His career ended on a high note in September 2023, when he triumphed at the Dutch Friesian Dressage Championships in Ermelo, scoring over 70% and receiving a standing ovation from the spectators. In 2024, during the Hengstenkeuring, he bade farewell to competition with a thrilling freestyle, remaining in everyone’s hearts.

Approved in 2016, Elias received the coveted Horse of the Year title in 2019, and then received final approval in 2023. He sired over 350 offspring, including Ster mares and stallions, thus proving that he was not only an outstanding athlete but also a valuable breeder. His legacy will live on through his descendants and in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known him.
